Permanent immigrants to the U.S. are divided into four general categories.

  • Family-Based Immigration
    Basically, this includes petition-based immigrant visas for spouses, children, adopted orphans, and parents of U.S. citizens and for spouses and children of lawful permanent residents. It also includes K-1 visas for fiancés and spouses of U.S. citizens, and for some dependents
  • Employment-Based Immigration
    • EB-1 Priority Workers
    • EB-2 Professionals
    • EB-3 Skilled or Professional Workers
    • EB-4 Special Immigrants
    • EB-5 Immigrant Investors
  • Diversity Visa (DV)-Lottery for nationals of certain countries
  • Asylum/Refugees. for people already admitted to the United States as asylees or refugees.
